Alex Weis

A recent addition to the Soby Boyden Lenz team, Alex Weis comes to the legal field after successful careers in business and professional sports. He is a native of Calgary and did his undergraduate work at the University of Calgary while playing on the varsity basketball team. In 1999, he moved to Europe to play professional basketball with UKJ SUBA in St. Polten, Austria. When he returned to Canada in 2002, he completed his undergraduate degree, earning a bachelor of arts from the University of Calgary and working as a personal trainer.

By 2007, Alex was the Director and Head of Human Resources for the Innovative Health Group, now INLIV. He went on to complete a master’s degree in strategic studies; during graduate school, he wrote his thesis on counterterrorism and sat on a number of committees.

In 2009, Alex relocated to Ontario, and in 2012 earned his law degree from the University of Ottawa, where he was a member of the Business Law Students Society and the Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights. While in law school, he wrote a major paper on spousal support and post-separation increases in income. This research sparked his interest in family law, an interest that was furthered when he was invited to intern with Soby Boyden Lenz in the winter of 2011. He returned to the firm as a summer student, and began articling for the firm in 2012. He enjoys the one-on-one client contact that is a natural part of practicing family law, as well as the satisfaction that comes from helping bring about positive change in peoples’ lives during times of turbulence and uncertainty.

In his current role as a student-at-law, Alex Weis has already gained significant experience and expertise in many types of family law matters. He has handled cases before the Court of Queen’s Bench and in provincial court, and he has successfully represented his clients in contested matters and Special Chambers Applications. He has also taken courses in alternative dispute resolution, and believes in the importance of mediation and arbitration as a means of achieving positive results without the expense and turmoil of courtroom proceedings. He has earned a reputation as an assertive presence in the courtroom, and a staunch advocate for his clients.

When not practicing law, Alex can be found sea-kayaking the Broken Islands off the coast of Vancouver, mountain climbing in the Rockies, and mountain biking throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and the United States. He still works occasionally as a personal trainer and leads fitness groups on outdoor excursions, multi-day hiking trips, and snowshoeing.
