Edward McCann

Ed McCann’s legal practice is informed not only by his extensive work as a family lawyer, but also by his experiences as a schoolteacher and professor. With this broad perspective, Ed McCann has the kind of experience and dedication that comes from four decades serving students, academics, and clients.

Ed earned his bachelor’s degree with honours in 1962 from Queen’s University in Belfast Northern Ireland, followed by a Diploma in Education in 1963 from the same educational institution. He taught school until 1968, and received a master’s degree in education from the University of Wales in 1970 and another master’s degree in 1977 from the University of Bradford in England.

From 1969 to 1984, Ed McCann was a professor of Educational Psychology at Stranmillis College in Belfast, as well as an accredited professor of Educational Psychology at Belfast Queen’s University. In 1986, however, he made the decision to change both career and country; he moved to Canada to study law at the University of Calgary. In 1989, he joined the firm of Soby Boyden Lenz as an associate, and he became a partner with the firm in 1991. He has argued cases at all levels of the Court of Alberta in issues involving spousal and child support, custody and access, as well as matrimonial and common law property division. He has also worked with cases pertaining to international family law, child abduction, and same-sex relationships. Ed McCann is one of Calgary’s leading lawyers on the subject of international child abduction and Hague Convention proceedings regarding children.

Ed has also held leadership positions in a number of professional organizations; he served as President of the Family Law Subsection of the Southern Alberta Canadian Bar Association, and as a participating member of the Advisory Panel on Sports in Schools for the Northern Ireland Government. He has continued his commitment to education as an instructor in family law for bar admission courses, and as a presenter at the Canadian Bar Association National Conference in 2007.

Ed McCann is a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Calgary Law Day Committee. He is also involved in his community, contributing to the activities of Parents Anonymous/Children’s Cottage and the Calgary French and International School. He has coached for the James Ray Rugby Football Club of Victoria, the Calgary Irish Rugby Football Club, the Canadian National Rugby Team, and the Western Canada High School Rugby Team from 2008 to 2011.

Ed has a lifelong interest in competitive sports; he enjoys running and resistance training, and he is certified as a personal trainer and a strength and conditioning specialist by the U.S.-based National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Ed has been married since 1982 and has one daughter, born in 1990.
