John C. Soby Q.C.

John Soby is a lifelong resident of Alberta. He was born in High River and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Alberta in 1962. He studied law at Dalhousie University; after graduating in 1965, he went on to article with the firm of C.G. Smith Q.C. and was admitted to the Bar in 1966. John worked as a legal associate at the firm of Prothroe, Gibbs, McCruden, Hilland, and McCombe (which eventually would become known as McClaws & Company following a merger with another law firm). John remained with McClaws & Company until 1971, when he joined the firm of Ghlitter & Company, where he practised until that firm’s dissolution in 1984.

For much of the first two decades of his legal career, John Soby enjoyed a wide and varied legal practice that included matrimonial law; during this time, he gained experience handling separation, divorce, and child custody and support cases. By 1986, John was already extensively involved in legal education, teaching bar admission courses in family law for over a decade, and was a sought-after speaker at family law courses and seminars. In July of 1986, John joined Elaine Lenz and Robert V.T. Boyden to form the legal firm of Soby Boyden Lenz for the express purpose of concentrating solely on family law.

Since then, John has been involved in a number of high-profile family law cases, some involving large estates and international issues. In 1997, due to his track record of success and his reputation in the field, John was invited to become a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 1998. To stay abreast of the growing trend towards alternative dispute resolution procedures, John completed the requisite coursework to become a registered collaborative law lawyer and mediator.

John Soby is a member in good standing of several professional organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association, the Calgary Bar Association, and the Law Society of Alberta. He is also a member of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and one of only two Canadians on the Academy’s Board of Governors. He has also served as the chairperson of the Southern Alberta family law subsection of the Canadian Bar Association, and is a committee member for Alberta Legal Aid. He continues his work as an educator by working as an instructor for the Legal Education Society of Alberta (LESA).

Today, as a leader in his field with an exceptional track record, John Soby enjoys a successful family law practice at Soby Boyden Lenz. He and his colleagues are committed to providing their clients with the highest level of legal representation in all of their family law matters, and are passionately dedicated to protecting their clients’ rights and best interests.
