Brian Galbraith LL.B.

With over two decades of experience in family law, Brian Galbraith is one of the preeminent divorce and family lawyers in Ontario. A native of Calgary, he holds a bachelor of arts degree in history and a law degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He articled with a prominent firm in Calgary before being called to the Bar of Alberta in 1990. Brian began his legal career with a focus on litigation, but soon discovered that his passion was working with family law issues, especially separation and divorce.

“I didn’t start my career intending to be a divorce lawyer,” says Brian. “In fact, in law school, I wanted to be a commercial corporate lawyer working big international deals. It was shortly into my career, when I met my first divorce client, that I knew I had found my passion.”

Brian moved to Barrie in 1992 and became a member of the Ontario Bar the following year. He was instrumental in bringing mediation to Simcoe County as a founding member of the Mediation Centre of Simcoe County, Inc.; this organization was awarded a contract to conduct all mediation for Family Court in both Simcoe and the District of Muskoka. Brian has also served as the president of the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association for Family Mediation for two years, and as president of the Simcoe County Family Law Lawyers’ Association.

Brian is committed to taking a collaborative approach to practicing law, and devotes considerable time to teaching lawyers and other professionals to do the same. He recently served as the first president of Collaborative Practice Simcoe County, an organization seeking to promote and develop collaborative practice in the area. In 2011, Brian was awarded the Founders Medallian by the Ontario Collaborative Law Federation for his efforts to bring collaborative practice to Ontario.

Brian was married in 1987 and is the father of three teenage boys from his first marriage. He and his wife divorced in 2003; this experience, while painful, has given him a unique gift of empathy with his clients. He knows and understands the turmoil that comes along with the breakup of a marriage, and is committed to providing support, advice, and excellent representation for his clients during this difficult time. Brian says, “One of the turning points in my life was going through my own divorce. I know firsthand what my clients are going through—the uncertainty, the embarrassment, the overwhelming thought of starting life over. I have empathy for them and I want to help them; I practice family law because I love being able to help people get better too.” His goal is to help his clients resolve the legal issues from their past, navigate their family’s transition, and help them open a new door to their future. Brian says, “I am a lucky guy to be part of that kind of healing.” He subsequently remarried in 2007 and has expanded his family – he and his wife have two children in addition to the 3 boys from his first marriage.
