Melanie Reist (employment law)

Kitchener lawyer Melanie Reist has 23 years of experience focused exclusively in the area of employment law. She began her legal career with a Toronto management labour firm; there, she first discovered her interest in employment law. In 1990, Melanie moved to Kitchener, where she was able to obtain invaluable experience working for both employers and employees dealing with labour issues. In 1992, she and Charles Morrison founded the firm of Morrison Reist; today, she is still dedicated to helping both employers and employees navigate their employment-related legal challenges. She is prepared to handle any employment matter, and has particular expertise in workplace investigations, human rights issues, workplace harassment, and employee misconduct problems.

Over the last two decades, Melanie has worked to establish herself as a lawyer who provides top quality legal services for each of her clients. She represents both employers and employees, and tailors her work to the needs of each client; she explains, “my experience enables me to understand the interests of both sides and reach a resolution.” She finds the practice rewarding because it is more than just legal analysis; “the human component is interesting and satisfying,” she says. She strives to listen to her clients’ stories and understand their unique goals, and is committed to developing innovative strategies to help them meet those goals.

Melanie Reist understands that when she meets a new client, it is almost always during a time of uncertainty; she offers legal advice and guidance with compassion and professionalism, so that her clients can feel supported and confident during what may be a challenging process. She understands that every case is different, and applies her expertise to find the best road forward for each client.

She is a tireless advocate in the courtroom, and has appeared before a number of administrative bodies including the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and Labour Board. Beyond litigation, however, Melanie Reist’s legal practice also includes her work as a mediator; she can act as a neutral third party who can work with employers and employees mired in workplace conflicts and disputes, and help them reach a mutually acceptable settlement and avoid expensive, time-consuming, and stressful litigation.

In addition to her successful practice in Kitchener, Melanie is also a contributing editor for the Exchange Magazine, writing about employment law and labour issues. Melanie is also in demand as a speaker for professional and community functions.
