Jeffrey Strype Honours B.A., M.A., LL.B. Specialist in civil litigation
Biography
Graduated from the University of Windsor Law School in 1977, and was called to the Bar in 1979. He is managing partner of Strype Barristers LLP. Prior to law school, Mr. Strype obtained his Honours B.A. in Political Science and M.A. in Political Science from York University.
Mr. Strype has tried over 400 jury and non jury trials. He has appeared before the Superior Court of Ontario, the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
He argued, in the Supreme Court of Canada, the Somersall v. Friedman case which governs insurance law in the field of under insured coverage.
More recently, Mr. Strype successfully tried and appealed Snushall v. Fulsang which now defines contributory negligence for the failure to use seatbelts. As the Supreme Court of Canada has denied the defendants appeal, the Snushall decision is the law on the use of seatbelts, in Canada.
In the case of Dusk v. Malone, Mr. Strype obtained a judgement for the Plaintiffs for a substantial business loss, making new law on business valuation. The defendant insurer paid the full amount of the judgement, well in excess of the Defendants policy limit, and the Plaintiff's under insured limits.
Mr. Strype is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in civil litigation.
His practice is in the field of medical malpractice (which emphasis on obstetrical and neonatal cases) and catastrophic personal injury.
He is currently a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, the Advocates Society, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Medico-legal Society, and the Metropolitan Toronto Lawyer's Association.
He has lectured on personal injury topics to major trauma hospitals and nurses across the province. Most recently he has lectured on contributory negligence based on his decision in the Court of Appeal on Snushall.
Mr. Strype is the president of the Markham Majors Hockey club; one of the leading "rep" hockey clubs in the Greater Toronto Hockey League.
